Review: Battle of the Mascaras

Hi everyone! I recently picked up an amazing value set at Sephora. For just $25 (which is the average price of mascara) I got five different deluxe samples of mascara. Unfortunately, Sephora does not carry this set anymore, but I thought I would take the opportunity to review the mascaras for you because they are all quite popular. For each mascara I curled my lashes with my Shu Uemura curler and wore each mascara for about 11-12 hours each day. I am also going to talk about the removal of each product, as I use makeup wipes to remove my makeup so being able to take off products easily is important for me.

Tarte

$20

First up is Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes. This mascara is great for curl and length. It doesn’t add as much volume, but I definitely get a nice, long curl that lasts all day. This is extremely easy to remove, but does not flake or wear off throughout the day, which is basically the best of both worlds.

Blinc

$26

Blinc’s mascara was definitely a new concept for me. The product uses ‘tube technology’ to literally coat each lash in a waterproof casing. This is important to know before using the product so you do not end up like I did in a panic thinking your lashes are falling off as you remove the product. This mascara is great for the summer time if you want natural looking, waterproof lashes. I would not use it for a dramatic look only because it does not provide a ton of volume or length.

Lancome

$27

Lancôme’s Hypnôse Drama mascara is definitely a strong contender. My favorite thing about the mascara is the brush. It has a curved wand, which really helps with the curl. I use this mascara for more dramatic, nighttime looks because it provides the most length and volume so my lashes are visible in front of lots of eyeshadow. It also wears for a very long time, as you can see in the photos, and it is extremely easy to remove, especially for a very dramatic mascara.

bareMinerals

 $18

BareMinerals’ Lash Domination mascara is not one of my favorites, but I do like it very much. This product is great for a simple look. It wears terrifically, as you can see, and it provides both volume and length. But, it’s not amazing. I would not choose this mascara first only because there are others that have the same features, but better.

BTS

$23

And the winner is Too Faced’s Better Than Sex mascara! I absolutely love this product. It is a triple threat: volume, length and curl. It makes my lashes so long and thicker, which is important for me because I have relatively thin lashes. It wears nicely and does not flake or smudge. And it is the easiest of the five to remove with makeup wipes. It does not get much better than this.

3 Easy Ways to Make People Think You Are the Perfect Fashionista

IMG_6524

Smell Good

For many of us, unless we have a particular obsession with fragrances, we often neglect perfume in the morning. An easy fix for this is to place your favorite scent next to the front door, in your car, or even in your bag – somewhere that you know you will see it. A quick two-second spritz before walking out of the house will make people think you spent so much time getting ready in the morning when you really just grabbed the perfume from beside the door as a last minute resort.

Have Pretty Nails

In the words of Morgan Stewart, “Having chipped nail polish is like having dirty underwear.” But, there is nothing more difficult than keeping nails in tip top shape; not everyone can get to a nail salon every week. Instead of dealing with the chipped nails, keep your nail polish color in your purse. This will make it extremely easy to fix any kind of nail polish chip. Bonus tip: throw in a small nail file too. This will also help you keep your nails in the perfect shape and keep a small crack from turning into a broken nail.

Never Go Naked

I 100 percent believe that the one thing that can pull together an entire look is lipstick. Lip color can make even the drabbest outfit look like it came right off the pages of Vogue. So, my tip is to never be seen with naked lips. But, we cannot all afford the time to constantly reapply and reapply and reapply. To solve this problem, invest in a lip stain! Even cheap ones will do the job. My favorites are L’Oreal’s Infallible lip color and Maybelline’s SuperStey 14hr Lipstick.

Fall 2014 Trends

My favorite season is almost here! I cannot wait for the brisk air and orange trees and, of course, the clothes! Fall clothes are always what I look forward to all year. So, today, I am going to tell you all about the trends for this fall.

Screen shot 2014-08-14 at 5.42.23 PM

60s Style

I am super excited for this trend; it is totally new and totally fun. This season, the streets will be filled with girls in A-line mini skirts and knee-high socks paired with oxfords. Another popular 60s style is the collared dress. My favorite style for this trend will be mid-length, long sleeved dresses. Specifically, this dress from the Lookbook Store is so trendy and elegant. The best thing about this trend is that it is so flattering.

Crazy Prints

Prints are not necessarily a new thing, but this year we are wearing them a little differently. We will see prints on all articles of clothing, and they will be paired with other prints. This outfit from Nordstrom shows the ‘mixing prints’ trend perfectly. This year, fashion is backwards: the more prints and the crazier the print, the better.

Wrap Coat

Much like the 60s style, this trend is extremely flattering. The wrap coat will literally look good on anyone – I swear. The tie immediately accentuates the waist, creating the illusion of both a smaller waist and a curvier body shape. I especially love wrap coats that have large collars.

Large Turtleneck

How appropriate for the fall – thank goodness! It is so great that a fall trend is actually going to keep us toasty warm this year. I just wish I kept the turtlenecks I wore from the 90s. I think this trend made a great comeback; enlarging the neckline of a turtleneck was genius, whoever thought that one up. It gives the old, worn out fashion a high-end, chic look.

Statement Bags

This trend is great because it is so customizable. A statement bag could literally be anything; it could look like an old boom box, it could say something, it could have tons of hardware on it, literally anything that makes it stand out. My favorite way to wear this trend is as a clutch.

Dress Over Pants

This trend I am a little hesitant about. It is pretty difficult to pull off wearing a dress over pants – not leggings – pants, like jeans. Do not get me wrong – I think the trend is so chic and I will definitely try to pull it off. I would say that the easiest way to wear this trend is with black skinny jeans.

B2S: Time-Saving Beauty Tricks

IMG_6511During the school year, I have very little time to do anything – either I lay in bed and have to rush getting ready, or it is super late at night and have five minutes to shower. Whatever it is, I try to do everything I can to save a little time. Here are my little tricks to save you some time during the school year.

Vaseline: The Miracle Product

I suggest buying a huge tub of Vaseline. It can be used for so many things from lips to feet. But, there is one use in particular that really comes in handy when you’re running late either in the morning for school or at night to hang out with friends. I use Vaseline for my zits, that’s right, my zits. I just apply a little dab of vaseline over the blemish in the morning and by the time I leave my house, the redness is completely gone. Now, it does not completely get rid of the zit, but it makes it easier for me to cover it up and I do not have to worry about the redness showing through my concealer throughout the day.

Tame Those Brows

This trick is for when you are at school or somewhere with your friends and you cannot get to your makeup. Whenever my brows get a little out-of-wack in the middle of the day, I just run to the bathroom and smooth a little moisturizer over them and it keeps them in place and looking good.

Make Your Shave Last Longer

I think most people go longer than usual without shaving in the winter, but here is a tip that will help you keep your smooth legs without needing to shave every day. Before shaving, exfoliate your legs. This will remove any dead skin, allowing you to get a closer shave that lasts for days. I prefer using an exfoliating rock, but a body scrub will also work well.

Quick-Clean Your Eyeliner Brush

If you use waterproof gel liner, you want to read this tip. I always when I reach for my eyeliner brush and it is hardened from the waterproof gel liner that was left on it from the previous day. So, what I do to prevent this is quickly wipe off the liner with a makeup wipe immediately after I use it. This way, I do not have to spend time deep cleaning my eyeliner brush the next morning.

Fashion 101: Shoes

Screen shot 2014-02-22 at 5.07.54 PM

Hey everyone! I am beginning a new series called “Fashion 101”. Each post will feature a different fashion piece (tops, jeans, accessories, bags, etc.) I will explain my favorites of that category and how I wear them and the current trend for the category. For the first post of the series I will feature my favorite of all favorites: shoes.

Favorites

Currently, my favorite shoes that I own are my “Levi” heels from ShoeDazzle (worn in this outfit). They are not sold online anymore, but there is a similar pair here. Oddly enough, I have not actually worn these that often because they are summer shoes and I bought them in September. They are the main reason why I cannot wait for Spring. My dream shoes are these Christian Louboutin Pigalle Spikes. Of course there is no sign of me getting these in the near future, but maybe in the far (far) future.

Trends

The Spring trends this year for shoes are pretty eclectic. Both flats and heels are on trend this season. The heel trend is  either a pointy toe and “old fashioned” low heel or a strappy pump. The strappy sandal trend is also seen in flats, but flats this season are also continuing the trend of a man’s business shoe. Snake prints and metallics are all over the runway on both heels and flats; BIG trend this year. These trends can be seen all in one shoe or completely separate from each other.

From the Runway To Reality

These trends are fantastic, but not everyone can buy multiple pairs of designer shoes (at least I cannot) so, here are some some affordable alternatives: snake print, metallic, strappy pump, low heel, flat.

My absolute favorite way to wear shoes is with jeans. I am obsessed with taking a regular pair of skinnies, rolling them up, and slipping on a pair of cute pumps, like in this outfit. I also really love pairing heels with another big trend: the midi skirt. With any midi skirt, it is helpful to wear a heel in order to elongate your legs because midi skirts can make your legs appear super short if worn wrong.

Surviving Winter for Beauties with Thin Hair

IMG_5278

I know that winter is almost over (definitely in other states), but there is currently snow on the ground here and there is more on the way. All season my hair has been fighting against the bitter cold and FINALLY, at the end of winter – great timing – won the battle.

First, a little background on my hair type. I  have thin hair, which means that it easily gets greasy and dirty. Consequently, I have to wash my hair every night, otherwise it is flat and literally looks wet from oils. Because of the constant shampooing and extreme weather, my hair is crazy dry and static-y. But, because of how fine my hair is, I cannot use a deep conditioner, hair mask, or even use too much of my standard conditioner. This is such a difficult predicament I have been in this winter, but I finally found a cure and I need to share it.

So, my current routine is to wash my hair normally every night (as usually) and then about once or twice a week I do a deep condition. I just use my regular conditioner and apply a generous amount all over my hair (as apposed to just the ends) and let it sit for about 3-5 minutes. Then, I rinse the conditioner and rewash my hair with a small amount of shampoo, just on the top of my head. This allows my hair to soak up all of the conditioner, but the shampoo removes any residue that might weigh down my hair and make it greasy. Additionally, I use a bit of hair oil on my ends later in the week when my hair becomes a little dryer.

I have found that when I do this I have absolutely no problems with static and my hair is not greasy or too flat. I am going to start using coconut oil for this (instead of regular conditioner) and see how that works. You can use any type of hair moisturizer; there are great lists of different kinds here and here. You can also make one at home.

How To Wear A Sweater

As it is officially sweater weather, I figured it would be an appropriate time to show you a few ways to wear a sweater, instead of just over jeans or with a skirt. I hope this gives you some inspiration!

With A Dress

IMG_6705

This is a great way to dress up your sweater for the winter. You could also pair a dress with a long sweater, instead of a cropped one, like I did in this OOTD.

With Tights

IMG_6706

Everyone loves to wear leggings and a big sweater every day in the colder months, so here is a way to look cute while staying comfortable. Instead of just black leggings, I threw on some textured tights and added a pink tank under my sweater, to make sure it covered everything! It looks put together and adorable, but I feel like I’m wearing pajamas.

As A Dress

IMG_6703

One of my favorite types of sweaters is a sweater dress. Sweater dresses are so pretty and can be dressed up or down. In this outfit, which I wore yesterday, I paired it with some heels and a big scarf. This is also a great way to wear colors in the fall and winter.

With Shorts

IMG_6708

A sweater with shorts may seem like a typical outfit combo, but there are definitely ways to spice it up. I chose an 80s inspired outfit by pairing a retro cropped sweater with some high waisted shorts and black tights. You could also go with a longer sweater and tuck it in to the high waisted shorts.
